MIDDLE ADRIATIC

PAKOSTANE (43° 55'N; 15° 31'E), town (pop. 2,155 in 1991) and small harbour at the entrance to Pasmanski kanal.

Approach: Landmarks: the belfry in the village, the string of islets (Babuljas, Veli skolj, Sveta Justina) off the entrance to the harbour, the green tower with a column and gallery (green light) on the head of the breakwater.

The most convenient of the four passages is the one leading NE of the islet of Sveta Justina (chapel). NE of the islet is a bollard on a concrete base in the sea; between the islet and the bollard is a shoal (1.8 m). Go between the bollard and the mainland coast (keeping as close to the latter as possible) bows-to the head of the breakwater.

Mooring: The small harbour (depth at the entrance 3 m) is only partially protected from the sirocco and open to the southwesterlies. Moor on the inner side of the breakwater small yachts drawing up to 3m only.

Facilities: Post office and medical service. Provisions, water from the hydrant on the mole. Fuel at the petrol station in Biograd.

Sights: Remnants of a Roman breakwater can be seen in the sea between the mainland coast and the islet inside the harbour. On the islet stands Sv Justina chapel (1670), erected on the site of an older parish church to commemorate the defeat of the Turkish fleet at Lepanto (1571).

PIROVAC (43° 49'N; 15° 40'E), village (pop. 1,513 in 1991) and small harbour in the SE part of Pirovacki zaljev.

Approach: Landmarks: round green tower with a column (green light) on the L-shaped part of the quay, which can be seen over the low point some 400m W of the harbour and the belfry in the town. Care should be taken of the islet of Sustipanac (ruins) in the middle of Pirovacki zaljev. West of the harbour is a shoal.

Mooring: The harbour is sheltered from all winds except the westerlies, which cause a sea in it. Yachts drawing up to 2m can moor along the L-shaped pier or along the quay near the harbour light. There is a good anchorage for small vessels W of the harbour; care should be taken of the submarine cable extending between Sv Jure point and the opposite side of the bay. The harbour is not recommended for a longer stay during the sirocco or W winds.

Warning: Mooring is prohibited on part of the waterfront.

Facilities: Post office and medical service. Several hotels. Provisions (supermarket) and water from a hydrant available. Fuel at the petrol station near the Adriatic highway. A motel is also situated near the highway.

Sights: Sections of a defense wall (1505), Gospa od Karmela church (Our Lady of Carmel 1506, reconstructed in the Baroque style in 18 C); on the islet of Sustipanac remains of Roman buildings and the ruins of a monastery dating from 1511; near the village of Dazlin is Sopalj forest a nature reserve.

TRIBUNJ (43° 45'N;15° 45'E), village (pop. 1,333 in 1991) and small harbour 1.2M west of Vodice.

Approach: Landmarks: off Sv Nikola church on the hill (51 m) NW of the village; the round red and black tower with a column and gallery surmounted by two black spheres on Bacvica reef; the green column (green light) in the middle of the mole in the harbour.

The harbour is approached from SE but small vessels may pass through the narrow passage between the islets of Logorun and Lukovnik, S of the harbour. Care should be taken of the three shoals (2, 2.5 and 6.5 m) W of the harbour and of the shoal E of it.

Mooring: The harbour is exposed to S winds and seas; the bora is moderately strong. Only yachts drawing up to 0.80m can moor in the harbour; there is an anchorage SE of the village (depths 79 m).

NE of the harbour light there is Tribunj marina under construction; semi-circular breakwater (200m long).

Facilities: Post office and medical service. Provisions and water available. The boatyard in Sovlje cove builds small boats and carries out repairs.

Sights: Sv Nikola church (1452). The ruins of a medieval fort in the old village of Jurjevgrad.
